I bought a Moser housing, 35 spline axles, and spool from Gears Are Us.

The center section is a Strange and the rear discs are from an F-body. I did the assembly and brake adaptation myself, and traded some stuff for the center section. I think the housing/axles/spool were about $800; I traded for the center section ($$$).

The F-body backing plates had to have the old mounting holes welded shut. The elegant way to use these is to let the backing plates double as the bearing retainer, keeping the bearings in the housing. I followed Moser's instructions for this and made a special jig with a piece of round stock welded to a piece of plate with a register turned on its' face to mount and center the backing plate.

Using the lathe I then cut a recess in the backing plate for the bearing (which sticks out of the housing end) to fit into, nicely retaining the bearing and axle when the backing plate is bolted to the housing.

I was so proud of myself. I took the backing plates home and tried to assemble them..only to discover that I'd machined the recess on the outside of the backing plates. Sighhhh...

I cut the hole on out and made shims to retain the bearings with the backing plates and retainer plates bolted on. Works fine but it would've been nice if I'd gotten the right side to begin with!
