F-body brake swap

The GS has warped rotors as long as we've had it. I've replaced 4 or 5 and they always exhibit runout shortly thereafter. This week the fronts started grinding again and I took this opportunity to (hopefully!) improve things.

Thanks to posts on www.RegalGS.org I found out that 98-02 F-body rotors, calipers, and caliper brackets will bolt on with only a simple redrill and tap of the caliper brackets to the 14x2.0 thread for the GS's caliper bracket bolts. You get 12" rotors, nice aluminum two piston calipers, and bigger pads, and it's all salvage yard sourced. My kind of swap!

I paid $125 for rotors, calipers, and brackets from an '02 Camaro through an online salvage yard. The parts arrived this week and I did the swap today. Warning: I didn't pretty up and paint the parts; when I work on the daily drivers, I'm sort of utilitarian.

These first three pics show the new F-body parts, the caliper without the bracket attached, and the F-body caliper bracket bolt compared to the modified caliper bracket, drilled out and tapped for M14x2.0.

Next, we have the original GS rotor and caliper (nice, eh?!), the GS bracket bolts next to the F-body bracket bolts, and the F-body rotor next to the GS rotor. Yes, the rusty rotor is actually the "new" part..I told you I didn't pretty things up!

In the next shot, I was trying to show how tight the brake hose was with the suspension at full droop and turned to the left. It could really use a hose about 1"-2" longer but it's not kinked so it's workable with the stock hoses. The last two shots are of the caliper clearance inside the stock 97 GS wheels. It has about 1/4" clearance.

I have only driven it a short distance so far; it feels like it has a bit more pedal travel and stops well.
